Rugby League – Types of Match

Although rugby league is not played as widely as rugby union, there are still plenty of competitions and leagues in the rugby league calendar with which to consider placing bets. From the Super League to Australia's massively popular State of Origin matches, rugby league has a lot of betting opportunities to offer.

Here is a selection of the most high profile matches in the rugby league calendar:

Types of Rugby League Match - Super League (Europe)

The Super League (Europe) or SLE as it's also known is the premier rugby league club competition in the Northern Hemisphere. The switch to a summer season has meant that the fixtures run alongside the Australian and New Zealand National Rugby Leagues, allowing more international matches between the three countries and leading some to believe that the standard of play has risen considerably. This, alongside more favourable weather conditions, means that attendance figures have gone up since the Super League' s introduction in 1996.

For Super League (Europe) matches, head-to-head and handicap betting are considered to be the most popular forms of rugby league bet. Odds are also given for First Try Scorer, winning margin and Half time / Full time result. You can also bet on your favourite rugby league team reaching the Super League Grand Final, which is held at Old Trafford each season.

Types of Rugby League Match - Australian National Rugby League

Australia's major rugby league club championship is generally regarded as the second favourite winter sport. The culmination of the Australian season is the National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final, which attracts millions of viewers a year and is a very popular betting event.

For NRL matches, handicap betting and head-to-head are the most popular forms of rugby league bet along with First Try Scorer and futures betting on a team's performance covering the entire season. As with the Super League, the NRL Grand Final pulls in many punters eager to have a flutter.

Types of Rugby League Match - State of Origin

The State of Origin competition is a highly popular and fiercely competitive series of rugby league matches between the Australian neighbouring states of Queensland (Maroons) and New South Wales (Blues). The two sides meet up for three matches to decide the winner for that year.

In this competition, the Man of the Match is an unusual rugby league bet that attracts a lot of interest. You can place a bet on your favourite player being named Man of the Match by the voting panel.

Types of Rugby League Match - Tri-Nations

The Rugby League Tri-Nations is a three-way competition between Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, and is now the annual season closer for rugby league. Bets are taken on outcomes such as the overall winner, highest scoring team / player and winning margins.

You can find more information about the rugby league Tri-Nations together with some hints and tips on how to bet on the event on our Rugby League - Tri-Nations and History of the Rugby League Tri-Nations pages.

Types of Rugby League Match – The Rugby League World Cup

Scheduled to be held in Australia during 2008, the Rugby League World Cup has been held since the 1950s and has been dominated by Australia. The format has changed many times over the years but is currently run in a similar way to the Football World Cup, whereby the teams play in groups and the winners of each group go on to the knockout stage that leads up to the final.

For longer competitions such as this, rugby league bets on highest try scorer of the tournament and overall winner are popular. Odds are also given on group winners and the first try scored in the competition.
