Australia / New Zealand 2006
The Rugby League Tri-Nations was first held in 1999 in Australia and New Zealand. The concept was dropped after the competition had finished, but was revived in 2004 as an annual end of season contest. This was partially due to criticisms that rugby league did not have a proper international calendar. The competition is played between Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain, with talk of including France for the 2009 competition. The next rugby league Tri-Nations tournament will be held in Australia and New Zealand in 2006. The tournament is currently sponsored by Gillette and is officially known as the Rugby League Tri-Nations. New Zealand holds the title. To learn more about how the Rugby League Tri-Nations has developed over the years, visit our History of the Tri-Nations page. Format of the Rugby League Tri-Nations
The Tri-Nations competition is seen as an extension of the early rugby league World Cup format whereby the teams play in a round robin contest with the top two teams playing in the final to decide the winner. Interestingly, the winning team has never finished top of the table in the history of the Tri-Nations competition. Past Winners of the Rugby League Tri-Nations
Great Britain has yet to win this competition, having been put in the shade by Australia and New Zealand. Australia has won the Tri-Nations title twice and New Zealand is the current title holder having beaten the Aussies 24-0 in the 2005 final. This was Australia's first international test series defeat in 27 years. Great Britain will not play in the Tri-Nations after 2006, and will be replaced by England. France is earmarked to join the competition in 2009, which will mean a re-think of the competitions name. Here are the previous winners of the Rugby League Tri-Nations championship: 2005: New Zealand 2004: Australia 1999: Australia. Betting on the 2006 Rugby League Tri-Nations
