2-3 December 2005
The William Hill Tingle Creek Meeting
The William Hill Tingle Creek Meeting is a two-day horseracing event held at Sandown at the beginning of December each year. The main event of interest to people wishing to make a bet on horse racing is the Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase. The race is a Group One jumps race (meaning that is one of the most prestigious races of the horse racing jumps calendar), and is run over a distance of two miles. The other major race of the weekend is the two-mile William Hill Handicap Hurdle. History of the Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase
Previously known as The Sandown Pattern Chase, the race was renamed in 1979 in honour of legendary racehorse Tingle Creek, trained by Tom Jones, who took part in the event on twelve occasions. Six of these were in consecutive years, and he won three of these and finished second in the other three races. In all the times that he took part in the race he never finished out of the first four. Until 1995, Tingle Creek returned annually to Sandown to appear in front of the crowds prior to the start of the race. He died in 1996, aged 30. Mitsubishi began to sponsor the Tingle Creek Chase in 1991, and it became known as The Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase.
Previous Winners of the Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase
The Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase differs from other races such as The Paddy Power Gold Cup and The Hennessey Cognac Gold Cup due to the high number of horses that have won the race on more than one occasion. In 2004, the previous years winner, Moscow Flyer, trained by Jessica Harrington and ridden by Barry Geraghty, again won the race. Moscow Flyer is one of six horses to win The Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase since 1979. The record for number of wins in this time goes to Flagship Uberalles, who has won the race three times, in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Other horses to have won the race more than once since 1979 are: News King (1981 and 1982), Long Engagement (1987 and 1989), Waterloo Boy (1991 and 1992) and Sound Man (1995 and 1996). Probably the most famous horse to have won The Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase was Desert Orchid in 1988, ridden by Simon Sherwood and trained by David Elsworth.

Betting on the Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase
As this is a race in which horses sometimes have repeat successes, its worth having a look at previous years results as well as looking at each horses form if you are thinking of placing a bet on the Mitsubishi Shogun Tingle Creek Chase. And even if you dont pick the winner this time, the Tingle Creek Chase can be an important indicator for events later in the jump-racing season. The Tingle Creek Chase is often seen as a precursor to the Queen Mother Champion Chase, which is held as part of The Cheltenham Festival in March each year. For example, Moscow Flyer won the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2003 and 2005 as well as winning the Tingle Creek Chase in 2003 and 2004. After a hat trick of Tingle Creek wins between 1999 and 2001, Flagship Uberalles went on to win The Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2002. The William Hill Handicap Hurdle
The William Hill Handicap Hurdle, also held as part of The William Hill Tingle Creek meeting, is a 2-mile handicap race. Previous winners in recent years include: Monte Cinto (2004), Overstrand (2003), Spirit Leader (2002) and Rob Leach (2001).
