History of the Accenture World Match Play Championship

The Accenture World Match Play Championship began in 1999 as part of a series of World Golf Championship events. The other events in the World Golf Championship series are The Bridgestone Invitational, The American Express Championship, and The World Cup.

The Accenture World Match Play Championship is attended by the top players from all the major tours. The tournament boasts one of the largest prize funds in world golf, with first prize for the event being in excess of $1 million.

It has been hosted at La Costa Resort and Spa, California, every year with the exception of 2002, where it was hosted at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Victoria, Australia. However, there is rumour that the location is to be changed for 2007.

Here are some of the key events in the history of the Accenture Match Play Championship:

1999: Jeff Maggert wins the inaugural event.

2002: The competition moves to Metropolitan Golf Club in Victoria, Australia. Kevin Sutherland takes the title.

2003: The event returns to La Costa after a year's absence. Tiger Woods takes the first of his two victories at the event.

2005: David Toms beats Chris DiMarco, 6 and 5 to win the $1.3 million first prize.
