History of West Bromwich vs. Aston Villa in the Birmingham Derby

One of the main local derbies to be held in the West Midlands is the West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa Derby. The first time that they met in a major championship was on 03 January 1885 in the F.A. Cup. The result was a goalless draw. They met again in the same competition a week later, and West Brom (nicknamed “The Baggies”) defeated Aston Villa three-nil.

The following year, however, Aston Villa had their revenge when they met West Brom again in the FA Cup, and won two-nil. Since then, Aston Villa has dominated in the derbies between the two teams. Of the 150 matches played, Aston Villa has won 70, West Bromwich Albion have won 50 and there have been 30 draws.

Aston Villa has also been more successful than West Brom in winning championships. They have been league champions seven times, won the FA Cup on seven occasions and won the League Cup five times. West Brom have been league champions only once, won the FA Cup five times and one the League Cup only once.
