History of Rangers vs. Celtic in the Old Firm Derby
One of the oldest and fiercest in world football is the Celtic-Rangers Old Firm rivalry, which dates back to the late 19th century when Celtic were founded in Glasgow's East End. The first meeting was at Celtic Park on May 28, 1888 in what was also the Celtics first-ever match, resulting in a 5-2 win. Their rivalry and massive support is evidenced by the fact that they hold the British record attendance for a league match - 118,567 for a New Year derby at Ibrox on January 2, 1939. However, the largest crowd ever to watch an Old Firm game was the 132,870 for the 1969 Scottish Cup Final. The nickname 'The Old Firm' originated when the clubs began to dominate Scottish football and also in part referred to the financial benefits associated with their frequent meetings, and The Old Firm is now used as a short hand to describe any derby match between the two clubs. Since 1890, Rangers and Celtic have won90 of the 108 Scottish premier league titles and 63 Scottish Cups. Next Old Firm Fixtures
