Everton vs. Liverpool – The Merseyside Derby

One of the most well known local derbies in British football is the Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool. The rivalry between the two teams is not purely based on the proximity of the clubs to each other, but is also due to the fact that Liverpool FC was born as a result of a dispute in the boardroom at Everton Football Club.

History of Everton vs. Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby

Everton FC began as St. Domingo’s FC in 1878, and the club changed its name to Everton in the following November. Everton was one of the founder members of the Football League when it was formed in 1888, and won the title for the first time in 1891.

Shortly after this, however, the rent for Anfield was dramatically increased, and board members were divided about whether to remain there or move to a new ground. Eventually Everton Football Club decided to lease a piece of land known as Mere Green Field, and built Goodison Park there. However, the club chairman, John Houlding chose to part from Everton and remained at Anfield, forming a new club which later became known as Liverpool Football Club.

The first Liverpool – Everton derby took place in 1894, and Everton beat Liverpool three-nil.

Liverpool have been more successful in winning championships than Everton over the years, becoming league champions eighteen times to Everton’s nine and winning the league cup seven times whilst Everton have yet to win it. However, the Merseyside Derbies have not been dominated by Liverpool. Although Liverpool has been more successful than Everton since 2000, Everton only lost once in eleven meetings between 1994 and 1999. This makes for interesting betting on the results.

The attendance records highlight the popularity of the Everton vs. Liverpool Derby. The biggest crowd for the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park was 78,299 on 18 September 1948, and this is also the record for the highest attendance at a home game in Everton’s history.

However, although highly competitive, the Merseyside Derby is also sometimes known as “The Friendly Derby”, as it’s not uncommon to have supporters of both teams within one family.
