History of the Arsenal vs. Chelsea Derby

The first derby match between Premiership clubs Arsenal and Chelsea took place on 09 November 1907. At that time, Arsenal was known as Woolwich Arsenal, its name deriving from the fact that the original team consisted of workers from Woolwich Arsenal Armaments Factory. The result of this first meeting was a two goals to one win for Chelsea.

The first Arsenal vs. Chelsea Derby following Arsenal’s name-change was an FA Cup match on 30 January 1915. Chelsea again won the match one-nil.

However, overall Arsenal has had more success in derby matches than Chelsea. In the 162 times the clubs have met, Arsenal has won 67 times, Chelsea has won 46 times and the teams have drawn on 49 occasions. Arsenal also have a far better championship record than Chelsea, having been league champions thirteen times, whereas Chelsea have only taken the title twice.

The results of the most recent premiership matches between the Arsenal and Chelsea, however, suggest that the result of their next fixture might not be as clear-cut as the history of the derby suggests, so it’s worth considering this if you are placing a bet on the match.
