Twenty20 is a new format of one-day cricket which was introduced into the English domestic cricket game by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2003. The Twenty20 Cup was introduced after much market research to attract children and families to attend matches, against a backdrop of falling crowds. The games are completed in three hours as each team bats for a maximum of 20 overs, so the emphasis is on scoring lots of runs quickly. The matches are also played in the early evening or late evening under floodlights. The Format of the Twenty20 CupThe format sees the 18 first class county cricket sides placed into three groups of 6 based on geographical location. The groups are: Midlands / Wales / West Group
North Group
South Group
The top two teams from each group and the two best teams in third position then meet in quarter final matches. The semi finals and final are held on one day; in 2006 they will be held at Trent Bridge on Saturday 12 August. Previous Winners of the Twenty20 CupThe last three winners of the Twenty20 Cup are: 2006 Leicestershire 2005 Somerset 2004 Leicestershire 2003 Surrey The format is now being used as part of the domestic cricket calendar in several countries and the first international version of the game was played between New Zealand and Australia on February 17 2005.
