How to Play Blackjack

Here you can learn how to play blackjack and understand its rules.

The object of the game is to make a hand where the points total is as close to (and including) 21. To win, the player’s cards value must beat that of the bank’s cards, without going over 21. If the total of the cards in your hand amount to 22 or over, your hand is “bust” and you lose your stake.

Face cards are worth ten, while aces count as either 1 or 11, depending on your preference; the ace is therefore a very valuable card to be dealt. All other cards are worth their face value.

When playing blackjack, players begin by betting an initial stake. The banker then deals each player two cards, face up, while the banker deals himself two cards, one of which is face up. Players then take it in turns to either draw a card (hit) or stay with cards they have (stick). Once all the players have finished, the dealer turns over his facedown card. Casino convention dictates that the banker will stick at 17 or above, and will hit on 16 or below.

If the player has a total of 21 with their first two cards (a face card or a ten with an ace), then they win automatically. This is known as “blackjack”, and winners receive one and a half times their stake, unless the bank also has a blackjack, in which case the player’s stake is handed back.

Players with a higher amount than the dealer win at evens (1-1). Players with a lower score lose their bets; while if the dealer “busts”, all the players win.

How To Play Blackjack - Split hand

If you are dealt cards of the same value in your initial hand, you may play them separately. You must match your initial stake waged at the beginning of the hand, and may then play each card as a separate hand. If you beat the dealer with both hands, you are paid on both of them.

How To Play Blackjack - Even money

A player with a blackjack may take a payout at 1-1 if the dealer shows an ace with his face-up card.

How To Play Blackjack - Double down

A player may double their initial bet immediately upon receiving his cards, but can only draw one card subsequently.
