History of William Hill

The company was founded in 1934 by William Hill and grew to be a world leader specialising in legal off-track wagering.

The key events in the company history are:

  • 1934: William Hill founded the business
  • 1966: William Hill bought into betting shops for the first time
  • 1971: William Hill became part of The Sears Holdings Group
  • 1988: William Hill were acquired by Grand Metropolitan and merged with Mecca Bookmakers under the William Hill name
  • 1989: Brent Walker acquired William Hill
  • 1997: Nomura acquired William Hill for £700m
  • 1998: The Internet betting service was launched
  • 2000: The online casino was launched
  • 2002: William Hill were floated on the London Stock Exchange
  • 2004: William Hill became a constituent of the FTSE 100

After the company floated on the stock market in 2002, the web-site was entirely re-designed, to coincide with the start of the 2002 Korean World Cup. The company had to use many different packages to localize their global website. It was also crucial for the site to have a wide range of languages to optimize business over the period. A company called SDLWorkFlow added content that spanned 5 languages to allow multilingual betting and increase turnover.

The William Hill Poker Room is one of the more popular poker rooms in Europe, with soft games (ones not reliant on training and practice to play) and good bonuses. One of the advantages of the site is the use of the CryptoLogic platform, which allows a shared player base. The success of this, coupled with loose, easy playability meant player volume on the site quadrupled during 2004.

They have one of the fastest growing internet gambling sites with betting on-line now taking 8% of the companies profit, nearly 2% more than phone betting takes each year and has over 292,000 active clients. It is now being called one of the most successful dot com businesses, with a large part of this success due to the use of RightNow Web eService Centre on the website, which has allowed the site to develop superior customer service, cutting the workload on call centre staff by reducing the amount of unnecessary phone calls taken by 40%. This system uses technology that can help predict and anticipate customer’s questions and allows visitors to the site to answer their own questions. New innovations like this have given the site the chance to deal more efficiently with customers and develop the site.
