About Ladbrokes
Ladbrokes are a long standing UK betting company, who whilst keeping their traditional values from the high street, have successfully expanded into other channels. This has cemented their reputation as an accessible and reliable around the clock service for any gambler in the 21st century
History of Ladbrokes
Ladbrokes history is entwined with UK betting history, which begun in the middle of the last century. In 1961, after Harold Macmillans Conservative Government decided to legalise betting shops, a large industry grew and at one time, there were 15,000 betting shops in the U.K. Cyril Stein was the founder of the Ladbrokes group during this period and he aggressively acquired sites, no matter their condition and refurbished them. Turnover soared and Ladbrokes became of the biggest betting companies in the U.K. The introduction of the betting tax led to Ladbrokes operating in Gibraltar for several years, until the Labour Government replaced the betting tax to a tax of 15% on gross profits. The organisation decided to move their telephone and internet business back to the UK, and Ladbrokes head office now resides in Harrow, Middlesex. Here are some of the key events in Ladbrokes history: 1975: The Grand National was in danger of closing, as property developer Bill Davies wanted to sell Aintree. Ladbrokes signed an agreement with Davies, allowing them to manage the Grand National. This was the case for eight years, until pressure from Davies meant that there was a real fight on their hands. The Grand National was finally saved. 1987: The international business of the Hilton Hotel Group was acquired by the Ladbrokes organisation. 1989: Ladbrokes sold its 20% share in Central T.V to Carlton for £29.5 million. 1994: The start of the National Lottery impacted the revenue of all the betting and football pools companies, leading to Ladbrokes acquiring Vernons, the pools company. 1999: The Ladbrokes Group was renamed the Hilton Group. 2001: Abolishment of betting tax. The hotel business is bigger than betting, but there has been a significant increase in total, in excess on 30% growth in betting. 2003: Ladbrokes is the first bookmaker to offer a total betting service, allowing people to use one account online, on the telephone and in their shops. 2005: Ladbrokes acquire the Welsh bookmaker, Jack Brown Ltd.
